Musicianship and
Improvisation: The Body of Music
During the weekend there will be five workshops devoted to a
practical exploration of improvisational process. The sequence of workshops
will begin with exercises devoted to the development of musicianship -- giving
everyone an opportunity to learn something about the various skills that go
into improvised music. This foundational material will blend naturally into an
environment for creative musical play, both on one's own and in relationship
with others.
- Listening as a creative act:
What I hear depends on me
- Intelligence of the body:
The body itself is designed to receive and play with
musical values
- Musicianship and
improvisation:
Integrating skills of perception and action, of
thinking and feeling
- Exploring relationship
through improvisation:
How we can use the world–the phenomena in and around
us–as inspiration, as a “score”
- Acting in concert:
performance as “being heard”
The attentive listening of others changes how I hear
my own music and can imbue it with meaning.
It is expected that the workshop participant will have
reasonable experience and control over their chosen instrument and that they
will bring anything needed for its use (e.g., amplifiers, cables, etc.). In
addition, it is suggested that each participant also bring:
1. a drum (or something to use for percussion) as well as
2. something to play on with which they have no technical facility. This could
be a different musical instrument or just an interesting household item such as
an oven grate -- or both!
