The Practical Basis of Biodynamic Agriculture
While it predates the modern organic farming
movement and is widely practiced in Europe, Australia, and parts of the
developing world, biodynamic agriculture is little known and often
misunderstood in America. This course will examine the fundamental
principles of this method of farming with an emphasis on practical
understanding and application. Topics will include the the idea of the
farm as a self-contained entity or "farm organism," the use of the
biodynamic herbal preparations as homeopathic treatments for the farm,
the relationship between crop plants and animals, and the role of the
human being in agricultural systems. Using East Hill Farm as our
setting, we will learn to observe the various forces at work in the
natural world and the ways in which they influence the growth and
health of our food plants and domestic animals.
