"Legacies" - 2007 Concert Series Concert One “Towards a New Music” June 9, Saturday at 3:00 PM The Chapel at Clifton Springs Spa Apartments, 11 East Main St, Clifton Springs Ensemble Resonance Trio: Michael Hunter, piano, Matthew Shubin, bassoon, and Paul Schliffer, flute, present the music of Bartok, Piazzolla and Komitas plus their own improvisations. Enjoy the rich acoustics in the lovely and historic Chapel at Clifton Springs Spa Apartment with its favrile glass mosaic by Louis Comfort Tiffany, and be ready to experience totally new colors emerging from this simple trio of instruments. Concert Two “Living Traditions” July 29, Sunday at 3:00 PM Rochester Folk Art Guild Hall, Middlesex Ensemble Resonance: The RFAG trio is joined by their French colleagues Christian & Marie Chanel, guitars, and Herbert Lashner, oboe, to present a concert of world music rooted in improvising traditions utilizing the full ensemble’s unusual instrumentation. As they delve further into the ancient modes and rhythms of these cultures in original improvisations, you will participate directly in the experience of hearing music never before presented come to life in the beautiful Guild hall! Concert Three “Emerald Stream – Music Without Borders” August 4, Saturday at 8:00 PM Rochester Folk Art Guild Hall, Middlesex Renowned director Mary Cay Brass has created a community based chorale centered in Vermont drawing fine singers from all over New England. They present a wide spectrum of singing traditions, including ritual and love songs of the Balkans, secular and sacred songs from the Republic of Georgia, spirituals, freedom and civil rights songs from various African countries, contemporary and traditional pieces in the early American shape note style, Gospel, Celtic, Appalachian, Russian and more. Your ears and heart will be enriched! Concert Four “Emerald Stream II - Sip and Listen” August 5th, Sunday at 2:00 PM Fox Run Vineyards, Penn Yan Choral folk traditions from around the globe come alive at Fox Run Vineyards during their hugely popular Garlic Festival. Concert Five “To Bulgaria and Beyond – Sladki Doumi and Karamfil” Sept 16th, Sunday at 3:00 PM Rochester Folk Art Guild Hall, Middlesex These outstanding singers and instrumentalists will take you on a musical journey to Eastern Europe, where love songs with sweet melodies and lively, complex rhythms are guaranteed to sweep you off your feet and onto the dance floor! Tour the Guild craft shops and East Hill Gallery before and after the concert. It’s an Open House! Concert Six “Latin Landscapes – the music of Jose Lezcano” Oct 7th, Sunday at 3:00 PM Rochester Folk Art Guild Hall, Middlesex Jose Lezcano is joined by Paul Schliffer and Matthew Shubin for this unique concert. Mr. Lezcano is a Cuban-born guitarist, composer, educator, and folklorist who has captivated audiences on four continents. His programs, spanning traditional and South American guitar repertory, his own solo, concerto, and chamber works, and inventive settings of authentic Andean folk music, have taken him from Carnegie Recital Hall and New York City's North-South Consonance Series to major venues and festivals in Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, China, Germany, and the Czech Republic. This concert features the world premier of a new work for flute, bassoon, and guitar. Don’t miss it! Concert Seven “Towards a New Music II - Summation” October 27 Saturday at 3:00 pm St. Johns’s Chapel at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva RFAG musicians Hunter, Schliffer, and Shubin close the series with the music of Villa Lobos, Stravinsky, and newly created improvisations linked to the earlier concerts. Mysterious guest artists are likely to appear! This concert is free!
