A Way of Working

The Rochester Folk Art Guild is a community of people sharing the aim of working practically toward a deeper understanding of themselves and their purpose, based on the teaching of G.I. Gurdjieff. Their crafts and community life provide ways to cultivate a special quality of attention amidst the activities of daily life.

Shibori is the Japanese  word for a variety of ways of embellishing textiles by shaping cloth and securing it before dyeing.  Rather than treating fabric as a two dimensional surface, with shibori, it is given a three dimensional form by folding, crumping, stitching, plaiting, or plucking and twisting.  The natural dyes used in this class include indigo, madder root, weld, cochineal, osage orange, walnut and fustic.  The colors are all derived from either plant material, wood chips, or bugs!

Class size is limited to 10 students.  Cost is $150 for the class, $65 for materials.

Supported in part with public  funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program,  which is administered locally by Phelps Historical Society
& Phelps Arts  Center.
